CoolSculpting Now FDA Approved to Treat Double Chins

Clients are enjoying an early holiday surprise now that CoolSculpting’s parent company Allergan has secured FDA approval for using the technology to treat double chins. Spectrum Dermatology has offered CoolSculpting, the innovative fat-freezing technology, for other parts of the body for years. However, the dreaded “turkey wattle,” or submandibular area beneath the chin, has continued to plague clients.

Additionally, the new FDA clearance now includes clients with a BMI of up to 46.2 to be able to use CoolSculpting when treating the under-chin area. Since CoolSculpting is a body contouring technology, not a fat loss tool, certain BMI restrictions are in place. However, the BMI tool for fat measurement has long been under scrutiny. Now CoolSculpting is accessible to more areas of the body and to more clients in general.

The new FDA guidelines make CoolSculpting the first and only option for fat reduction treatment below the jawline. Addressing this common issue can make a person look years younger. Although pockets of excess fat are often the cause of the turkey wattle, genetics can also play a role.

According to the chief of research and development at Allergan, David Nicholson, “The CoolSculpting treatment is the clinically proven safe and effective leader in nonsurgical fat reduction with 9 clearances and over 7 million treatments performed. This new indication to treat the submandibular area underscores Allergan’s dedication to research and innovation within the body contouring category.”

Clearance was granted after a 22-week clinical study was completed. Researchers found that treating this area with CoolSculpting led to a 33 percent reduction in fat thickness with just two treatments. Patient satisfaction was ranked at 85 percent in three separate studies.

CoolSculpting can target fat pockets and freezes the area in a controlled environment. It does not harm the surrounding tissue and, like liposuction, the fat is removed permanently. This year, CoolSculpting was ranked for the fifth consecutive time as a NewBeauty Beauty Choice Award Winner.
