Why Evidence-Based Aesthetic Dermatology is Important

Evidence-based esthetic dermatology means considering the latest findings and research when adopting a dermatological approach, technique, technology, or product. It has always been a pillar at every Spectrum Dermatology center, and incorporating an evidence-based approach is what keeps our patients safe while ensuring incredible, natural-looking results. However, there is no international definition of an “esthetic practice” when it comes to aesthetic dermatology, although the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery calls it a “subspecialty of medicine” specifically for appearance enhancement.

The Science for Younger Skin

There may be a lack of a global definition, but the worldwide esthetic dermatology market is booming. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery found that millions of surgical and non-surgical procedures take place in the US every year, with non-surgical procedures making up 81% of the total. In the past 20 years, there has been a 444% increase in cosmetic procedures, with non-surgical procedures (such as Botox and dermal fillers) skyrocketing 726%.

The most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedures are all skin- and face-focused. They include Botox, laser hair removal, fillers (specifically hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers), microdermabrasion, and chemical peels. Although laser hair removal can be applied to virtually any part of the body, the face is one of the most common targeted sites.

While women still make up the majority of non-surgical aesthetic dermatology treatments, more and more men are starting to opt for treatments. Patients between 35 – 50 years old make up 47% of these treatments, while those aged 51 – 64 make up 24% of patients. Patients between the ages of 19 – 34 also make up 24% of the total. Younger patients prefer laser hair removal, light chemical peels, and microdermabrasion while older patients prefer dermal fillers for lost volume, moderate and intense chemical peels, and laser skin resurfacing.
