05 Oct “Ruby” Red for Pesky Brown Spots
The stolen ruby red slippers worn by Judy Garland have finally been returned, but they’re not the only ruby making headlines. Spectrum Dermatology offers the Ruby Laser treatment specifically to target brown spots caused by the sun and aging. However, the ruby laser isn’t a new technology. It was created in 1960 by Ted Maiman at Hughes Research Laboratories. It was the very first laser created and based on a ruby crystal that was flashlamp-pumped. Even though the helium-neon laser was invented soon after, it didn’t come close to comparing to the ruby laser. This original design has withstood the test of time and remains one of the most effective lasers on the market. (Of course, it’s been perfected over time and is customized specifically for dermatological purposes.)
What Are Brown Spots?
Brown spots are really gatherings of melanin. They are similar in makeup to moles, although people are often born with moles which are very densely gathered areas of melanin. Brown spots are usually lighter than moles and can be larger or develop in a “spray” pattern like freckles. Melanin is the body’s way of defending itself against dangerous UV rays. The more a person is exposed to the sun, the more brown spots they are likely to get. Fair-skinned people are more prone to visible sun damage and age spots simply because they don’t have enough natural melanin in their skin to defend themselves against UV rays.
Melanin and Brown Spots
Nearly anyone regardless of melanin level can develop sun or age spots. These spots usually aren’t dangerous, although it’s still a good idea to get a mole check every year from your dermatologist. However, they can be unsightly and lower a person’s self-esteem. They can make you look older, and for those who wear makeup, it can be a challenge to achieve a balanced skin tone when you’re trying to cover up brown spots.
Treating Brown Spots with a Ruby Laser
Many types of lasers may be effective in treating brown spots. The ruby laser uses a three-level solid-state laser. It’s one of the few solid-state lasers that can create visible light. With optical pumping techniques, energy is supplied to the laser medium. Using a synthetic ruby crystal, it’s able to target brown spots to fade them and give clients younger looking skin.
