Summer Vacations After Laser Skin Resurfacing

Everyone wants to look their best on a sunny summer vacation, but what about sun exposure after laser skin resurfacing? Spectrum Dermatology has a variety of laser devices in various strengths, including the lighter resurfacing of eMatrix and CO2 laser resurfacing treatments for more noticeable results. The more intense the laser, the better the results, but also the more sensitive the skin will be to the sun post-treatment.

What Is Laser Skin Resurfacing

Laser skin resurfacing treats a number of skin complaints, including sun damage. However, lasers also work by micro-damaging the skin in order to reveal younger-looking skin below the surface. It can take weeks for the skin to fully heal from laser skin resurfacing, though in many cases the person looks perfectly normal just a few days or hours post-treatment (depending on the patient and the laser strength). Still, excessive exposure to the sun without protection is strongly discouraged post-treatment. Skin is highly sensitive, and a person can burn easier than normal.

Protecting Your Skin After Laser Skin Resurfacing

Ideally, a person should wait as long as possible after laser skin resurfacing before taking a sunny getaway. However, if that is not possible, there are numerous protecting measures to be taken. First, make sure to dress in loose clothing that covers any treated area if applicable (such as the décolletage). Always wear a wide-brimmed hat in order to keep the face shaded.

Sunglasses with UV protection can provide an extra layer of protection. Your dermatologist will recommend the best sunscreen for you post-treatment. It will likely be different, and stronger, than typical sunscreens. Apply liberally to all parts of the skin that will be exposed to the sun, and re-apply every two hours. Remember that sun damage can occur indoors if your skin is exposed to UV rays that come through a window. “Being outside” isn’t the only time it is important to wear sunscreen.

Seek out shade when possible, such as when you’re dining al fresco. These best practices can and should be applied daily, but are especially important when you’re recovering from laser skin resurfacing. To schedule your appointment, call Spectrum Dermatology at 480-948-8400.
