Surgical dermatology requires a customized approach designed to fit each patient’s unique needs and goals.

At Spectrum Dermatology, board-certified dermatological experts have the training and experience to ensure a successful surgery. When facing any surgery, whether elective or necessary, it is normal to want the best results. Reduced scarring and minimizing tissue trauma are key for a fast recovery.

“Dr. Rubenzik is an excellent dermatologist who takes the time to listen and discuss treatment options with her patients. She makes decisions with the patient and is not a “one size fits all” doctor. She is highly knowledgeable and friendly! One of the best dermatologists we have ever had for the entire family.”

Surgical Dermatology at Spectrum Dermatology

With six offices in the Phoenix and Scottsdale area, patients are in good hands. Spectrum Dermatology offers the following surgical procedures:

  • Mohs surgery. Mohs surgery is an innovative procedure used to remove precancerous and cancerous lesions. It combines dermatology with pathology, so patients only need one appointment to ensure the affected area is removed. In typical biopsy situations, a dermatologist removes a larger section of tissue and sends the sample to an off-site lab. It can take days or even weeks to receive results. If it’s reported that the entire affected area was not removed, additional biopsies will be necessary. This leads to unnecessary worry, time, and money spent. Mohs surgery has a biopsy lab on-site, and patients receive results immediately. If cancerous areas remain, an additional small section is removed and tested. This process is repeated in a single appointment until the biopsy report is “all clear.” The result is a completely clear area with minimal scarring.
  • Skin cancer treatment. There are many types of skin cancer and many treatments. Removing the cancerous area is often the fastest and best way to ensure a patient is cancer-free. One of the best types of skin cancer treatments for early-stage cancer is Mohs surgery. Spectrum Dermatology is one of the few clinics in the area that offers this revolutionary procedure. When caught early, skin cancer can often be treated by surgical excision alone.
  • Moles. Moles can be surgically removed for aesthetic or medical reasons. However, it is often recommended that all moles be checked for signs of cancer. Not only does a biopsy provide peace of mind knowing there is no cancerous area, but this can also mean that the surgery is covered by insurance providers (always check with your provider first). Most moles are harmless, but they are the leading early sign of precancerous and cancerous lesions.
  • Scar revision. Not all scars heal well. Non-surgical scars can be especially prone to “over-healing,” resulting in a raised, ropy, and sometimes painful keloid scar. There are many treatments for scar revision, including corticosteroid injections, laser skin resurfacing, and scar revision surgery. Scar revision can help a scar “re-heal,” and a dermatologist works with patients to make sure proper aftercare is followed.
  • Earlobe repair. Earlobes torn from the weight of heavy jewelry, getting earrings caught, or stretched-out gauges that are no longer desirable can be treated with a simple earlobe repair surgery. The exact approach depends on the tear and goals, but in most cases the ear is trimmed and stitched into the preferred size and shape. Earlobe repair can also be used to treat earlobes that are deemed too big, which can happen with age.
